Chapter 8
An important theme in this novel is that people should follow their dreams and do what they believe is right, even if they don't follow their society's expected ways. The author examines this theme in a stone age setting. what if a boy wants to be a cheerleader does he have to stop his dream because people make fun of him and his parents talk bad about him being a cheerleader. I think he should follow his dream because he could get very far.
Imagine a similar situation today. Imagine a young person who wants to do something with their life that is different from what is normally expected in our society.
What situation did you imagine? I imagined that the boy is cheerleading and that everyone is laughing at him but he just doesn't pay attention to them.
In the situation you imagined, should the person follow his or her dreams or should they follow society's expectations? Give your opinion. I think he should follow his dream because he could get really far with his dream.

My friends and I follow all the latest fads. yes
I have my own unique style. yes
I always do what my parents and teachers expect of me. sometimes
I will follow my own dreams, even if others try to stop me. yes
I want to live with my family when I go to college. no
I want to go to a college far from home. no
I wouldn’t marry someone if my parents disapproved. no
I will marry whomever I choose. yes
Being popular is important. no
I don’t care what other people say about me. no
Let them be as flowers,
always watered, fed, guarded, admired,
but harnessed to a pot of dirt.
I'd rather be a tall, ugly weed,
clinging on cliffs, like an eagle
wind-wavering above high, jagged rocks.
To have broken through the surface of stone,
to live, to feel exposed to the madness
of the vast, eternal sky.
To be swayed by the breezes of an ancient sea,
carrying my soul, my seed, beyond the mountains of time
or into the abyss of the bizarre
I'd rather be unseen, and if
then shunned by everyone,
than to be a pleasant-smelling flower,
growing in clusters in the fertile valleys,
where they're praised, handled, and plucked
by greedy, human hands.
I'd rather smell of musty, green stench
than of sweet, fragrant lilac.
If I could stand alone, strong and free,
I'd rather be a tall, ugly weed.
